چکیده

We combine density functional theory (DFT) within the local density approximation (LDA), the quasiharmonic approximation (QHA), and a model vibrational density of states (VDoS) to calculate elastic moduli and sound velocities of g-ðFex,Mg1 xÞ2SiO4 (ringwoodite), the most abundant mineral of the lower Earth’s transition zone (TZ). Comparison with experimental values at room-temperature principles findings. Then, we investigate the contrasts associated with the b-gðFex,Mg1 xÞ2SiO4 transformation at pressures and temperatures relevant to the TZ. This information offers clearly defined reference values to advance the understanding of the nature of the 520 km seismic discontinuity. & 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Thermal elasticity of (Fex,Mg1 x)2SiO4 olivine and wadsleyite

[1] We present first-principles results for elastic moduli (bulk, K, and shear, G) and acoustic velocities (compressional, VP, shear, VS, and bulk VΦ) of olivine (a) and wadsleyite (b) (Fex,Mg1 x)2SiO4, at high pressure (P) and temperature (T) with varying iron content (0≤ x≤ 0.125). Pressure and temperature derivatives of these properties are analyzed. We show that adding 12.5% of Fe in forste...

Splitting of the 520-kilometer seismic discontinuity and chemical heterogeneity in the mantle.

Seismic studies indicate that beneath some regions the 520-kilometer seismic discontinuity in Earth's mantle splits into two separate discontinuities (at approximately 500 kilometers and approximately 560 kilometers). The discontinuity near 500 kilometers is most likely caused by the (Mg,Fe)2SiO4 beta-to-gamma phase transformation. We show that the formation of CaSiO3 perovskite from garnet can...

Effect of water on the sound velocities of ringwoodite in the transition zone

High-pressure elasticity studies will play a central role in efforts to constrain the potential hydration state of the Earth's mantle from seismic observations. Here we report the effects of 1 wt% H2O (as structurally bound OH) on the sound velocities and elastic moduli of singlecrystal ringwoodite of Fo90 composition, thought to be the dominant phase in the deeper part of the transition zone b...

Seismic evidence for accumulated oceanic crust above the 660-km discontinuity beneath southern Africa

[1] High-pressure assemblages of subducted oceanic crust are denser than the normal upper mantle but less dense than the uppermost lower mantle. Thus subducted oceanic crust may accumulate at the base of the upper mantle. Direct observational evidence for this hypothesis, however, remains elusive. We present an analysis of a negativepolarity shear wave converted from compressional wave at a sei...
